Chapter Nineteen
Emmalyn
The atmosphere in the room takes on a business feel as Marx takes his seat across from us. My mother in the back corner drinking her life away stays silent, and Marshall and Buck haven’t moved from their spot by the door.
“Well, you are already aware of all her formal training and what she already knows.” Lifting a file, Marx shifts forward, placing it in front of my buyer and me. “If you would like to have a look, I pulled together her life, and you can decide what is good and what more you would like her to know.”
Reaching over me, he leans forward, causing me to lean as well and opens the file. The first thing I see is a picture of me when I first arrived. An ache forms in the back of my throat as I look at the terrified little girl who is unrecognizable … or maybe it’s who I am now that is unrecognizable. The girl in the picture with wide eyes and tears streaming down her face looks so sad, so alone. But what’s more is what’s hidden beneath the depth of her stare, there is defiance … defiance I haven’t seen in myself in a long time.
Feeling my chest tighten my breathing comes out choppy, and I have to look away, but when I do I meet the cool eyes of my buyer who is staring at me with a confusion that almost scares me more than when they are filled with hate.
“This girl in the picture, she is you?” He directs his question at me.
Taken aback by the harshness in his voice, I look to Marx for guidance at what I am supposed to do.
“No, you don’t look at him, he is no longer your father. I am your Master now; you will speak to me,” my buyer barks gripping my chin so I’m forced to look at him. “Is this girl you?”
“Yes, sir,” I whisper, my body visibly shaking.
Letting go of me, he looks over to Marx. “Is this when she first arrived?”
Looking to Marx, I am caught off guard from the uncertainty I see in his eyes. He has never been anything but self-assured.
“Yes, is there a problem?”
The arm that is draped around my back tenses, the feel of his fists clenching and the energy radiating from his body sends an electric charge through the air.
What the fuck is going on?
Right when I feel like something is going to happen, Buck clears his throat causing my buyer to snap out of whatever trance he was in.
Looking back to the file, he flips the picture over and begins reading through the papers. “No, there’s no problem.”
“Well as you know, Drifter, it’s been a very long time since we have done business together and I am well aware of your Nomad status, so I assume none of this will be getting out to any of the clubs you associate with?” The tone in Marx’s assumption almost comes out nervous.
Clubs? Like bikers? What would the chances be … No, it’s impossible.
